By Rosalie Kramm, CRR
Principal – Kramm Court Reporting, A Veritext Company
I am incredibly proud to be a court reporter and have always felt a strong connection to all working reporters, and so when selling to a larger company after 34 years of owning and operating Kramm Court Reporting, I was looking to partner with a company with integrity, a company that offered me the platform to continue to advocate for the working reporter, and who could put my company in a better position to support my clients.
I have been a working court reporter for almost 40 years and have loved almost every minute. In 1995 I went to the very first DRA convention and felt an immediate connection to the court reporters who attended. In 2003 I was elected to be a District Rep (San Diego), and in 2008 was elected president of DRA. In 2012 I was elected president of STAR and in 2013 was appointed by CA Governor Jerry Brown to serve on the Court Reporters Board of California. I have enjoyed all of my roles in every association because it gave me a chance to connect with my fellow reporters, and I have no intention of leaving the industry. I love court reporting.
Now, 33 years later, why did I choose Veritext?
Maintaining my relationships with reporters: Veritext understood my relationship with court reporters and my reputation of “having the court reporters’ back.” They asked if I would take on a role within the company that would allow me to continue to be a hands-on advocate for reporters, but now on a national scale. I now have the opportunity to work with the Veritext team to continue creating and teaching educational workshops, writing informative articles, advising working reporters, and mentoring new students.
Keeping my clients happy: With Veritext I can offer my clients robust technology, conference rooms everywhere, and I am still here able to partner the best court reporter to the case best suited for them.
Court Reporter shortage: Another reason for my decision to sell is the court reporter shortage in California. “When I couldn’t find a court reporter to cover our jobs, turning down work wasn’t an option for me. On many occasions I personally flew up to San Francisco the night before, drove the 3+ hours to Los Angeles, or took three jobs a day, just to cover our work. We couldn’t grow as a company.
Here is a real life example to put it into perspective: One day we had a job in San Francisco that was given back to us three times. One reporter said she had mistakenly double-booked, the next reporter that took the job called and said someone had just offered her a job near her house, so she wouldn’t take our job, and the next reporter said she had just got an all-day job offer so couldn’t take our job. It hurt my heart.
Now, with Veritext as my partner, my job is to support all reporters, no matter who they work with, to be stronger and happier. I am super excited to have this role and am excited for the future. My best talent, in my opinion, and what makes me happy, is making court reporters even more great. I believe our talent is a super talent. Very few humans can do what we do.
I am thrilled to be staying on with Veritext and will always remain the court reporters’ friend, advocate, champion, and biggest fan.
Let’s all be great together. We are in the best profession ever in the world!
