Finding “Windows” of Efficiency: Shortcuts using the Windows Key

As reporters, we are expected to have things done immediately…or yesterday.  This means we need to find faster, more efficient ways to accomplish our tasks.   Keeping your hands on the keyboard and not having to move back and forth between your mouse and keyboard saves valuable seconds when you’re racing the clock.

In this installment of Tips & Tricks, we will be finding “windows” of efficiency, by using the Windows Key.

  • WINDOWS LOGO KEY + D: Hides/Displays the desktop

Use this to quickly hide your screen for privacy.

  • WINDOWS LOGO KEY + CTRL + D: Opens up your virtual desktop

This is a feature that was inspired by Mac and Linux systems.  It comes in handy when you are using multiple programs at once and want to keep your projects organized.

  • WINDOWS LOGO KEY + I: Opens Settings

Windows is slowly moving away from the Control Panel and will be migrating everything to be housed in the Settings Menu.  This may be helpful as you start to familiarize yourself with the Settings menu.

  • WINDOWS LOGO KEY + L: Locks your PC

Whenever an attorney asks you to leave the depo room, quickly lock your screen without fumbling around on your computer.  When you log back on, your desktop will appear as it was.

  • WINDOWS LOGO KEY + M: Minimizes all active windows

This is a variation of displaying the desktop.

  • WINDOWS LOGO KEY + SHIFT + M: Restores minimized windows

A quick way to reopen all your minimized windows.

  • WINDOWS LOGO KEY + P: Opens projection options

A quick shortcut to add a second screen or connect to a projector.
